Heather Baker, 321’s Curriculum Coordinator in cooperation with Tim King, Middle School Principal, presented CPR training to Mr. Kunkel’s High School P.E. classes on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Students were introduced to CPR by an American Heart Association video as they sat at tables in groups with their CPR Manikins. They learned to identify signals one might encounter during an unexpected medical event. The video demonstrated steps and procedures and prompted students to apply live-saving techniques. Actors were instructed to point and call out to nearby classmates, “YOU, call 9-1-1” and reminded, if necessary, to activate their own ‘speaker’ phone to call 9-1-1. A suggestion of performing the chest compression to the catchy beat of “Stayin Alive” or “Baby Shark” was helpful, and scenarios were introduced that may arise in the case of an emergency. Onsite nurse, Andrea McGrew, followed the CPR training with how to administer an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) device and identified AED locations throughout the district. The question and answer session was open and comfortable and students were assured that it is OK to assist someone who may be in need of CPR/AED because good citizens are protected under the “Good Samaritan” law. Thank you to all who supported and participated in these important high school level mandated training sessions.
