The Pecatonica High School (PHS) hosted a Heart Health Assembly on Friday, February 20, 2020. Cheri Spath, guest speaker, shared the experience of her high school daughter, Grace, and the day Grace went into sudden cardiac arrest...Grace was about to start her junior year in high school and was very active on the swim team. Grace went to swim practice a few days before school started and during practice, while she was in the pool, experienced a sudden cardiac event. Grace’s coach pulled her out of the pool and began CPR within seconds of Grace saying, “I don’t feel well" and blacking out. Cheri’s daughter was saved by CPR and the quick acting of all involved. Cheri now speaks about how important knowing CPR is and how grateful that her daughter’s life was saved. Grace is now in Freshmen in college and wrote an essay about her experience and how it her changed her life. Kaylie Huttenlocker, a PHS student, read the essay for the student heart assembly. After the presentation the PHS students participated in fun heart-themed competitions. Thank you Cheri for sharing your story with the PHS students and staff.
